zwei herren im anzug (two men in suits) is a fiction film by josef bierbichler, adapted from the novel “Mittelreich” by the same author.

a story that spans 100 years in bavaria, it is an epic family saga about three generations of lakeside landlords, dealing with war and destruction, old power and new wealth, and the so-called “years of plenty.”

it is the year 1984, and summer is coming to an end.

in the disused dance hall of a once-traditional inn by the lake, the innkeeper and farmer pankraz and his 35-year-old son semi have just seen off the last guests who had come for the wake in honor of the late wife and mother, theres. now father and son sit together in a forced companionship, talking about the past: world war i and ii, the allied occupation, the first tractor, the cold war, the economic miracle, refugees, student protests, the family. everything is discussed haltingly and very personally, and (for the viewer) comes into focus.

from late afternoon into the early hours of the night, two unknown, elegantly dressed gentlemen will accompany them—as uninvited yet insistent prompts for their family memories spanning a period of 70 years.
