Course content

1.What is psychoacoustics?

• Psychophysics and psychoacoustics
• Physical and perceptual attributes
• Why is psychoacoustics important for music production?
  • Many techniques and invention used in music production result from findings from psychoacoustics
  • The results of research in psychoacoustics tell us, what we can hear and what we cannot
  • In music production it’s a mistake to consider only objective characteristics of sound and signal, since the relationship between those and hearing can sometimes be very complex
  • It is really helpful to know how the ear system works, in order to reach quicker a given goal while producing music

2.The physiology of the ear

• The ear has two tasks:
  • to transform ear pressure informa8on into nerve
    impulses
  • to participate to the sense of balance (thanks to the so-called vestibular mechanism in the inner ear)
• Inner ear, middle ear, outer ear – Inner hair cells – Corti organ

3.Hearing damages

• The hair cells can hardly regenerate
• Causes of hearing loss
• Producing music every day may not entail long-term hearing damages, but is anyway quite exhausting for the ear
• With increasing ear fatigue, the accuracy of the perception and the attention decrease

1.Was ist Psychoakustik?

  • Viele Techniken und Erfindungen, die in der Musikproduktion benutzt werden, folgen aus Entdeckungen der Psychoakustik
  • Die Ergebnisse der Psychoakustik lehren uns, was man hören und nicht hören kann
  • In der Musikproduktion wäre es ein Fehler, nur die objektiven Klang- und Signaleigenschaften zu betrachten, weil die Beziehung zwischen diesen und dem Hören manchmal sehr kompliziert sein kann
  • Es ist wirklich hilfreich zu wissen, wie das Gehör funktioniert, um schneller das gewünschte Ergebnis in der Musikproduktion zu erreichen

2.Das Hörorgan

• Das Ohr hat zwei Aufgaben:
  • Umwandlung des Schalldrucks in Nervenimpulse
  • Teil vom Gleichgewichtssinn (im sogenannten Vestibularapparat, ein Teil des Innenohrs)
• Innenohr, Mittelohr, Außenohr – Innere Haarzellen – Corti-Organ

3.Gehörschäden

• Das Innenohr kann sich kaum regenerieren
• Mögliche Ursachen von Gehörschäden
• Die alltägliche Arbeit in der Musikproduktion ist für das Gehör sehr anstrengend, auch wenn es das Gehör permanent nicht schädigt
• Mit Hörermüdung wird die Akkuratesse der Empfindung und die Aufmerksamkeit immer schlechter
